West Michigan Handyman: 15 Home Maintenance Tips using White Vinegar



The local handyman suggests 15 ways to use white vinegar to save money on home maintenance tasks.  Hiring a plumber, exterminator or professional cleaning company can be costly, but who would guess that white vinegar could provide so many great solutions!

1. Exterminating ants…wipe cabinets, floors, and counters with 50/50 solution of water and vinegar.

2. Oven cleaner…using a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar, wipe out oven with dampened rag.

3. Odor remover…small bowls of vinegar around a room gets rid of cooking odors and one cup of vinegar in the washing machine removes sour smell in towels. To remove onion smells from your hands, simply rub them with vinegar.

4. Carpet cleaner…1 teaspoon white vinegar, 1 teaspoon liquid detergent, 1 pint of lukewarm water mixed together, spray on carpet and remove with dry rag to remove odors and stains.

5. Remove mortar residue…combine 1 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon water.

6. Fabric softener…place 2 cups of white vinegar into rinse cycle to soften cotton and wool blankets.

7. Ceramic tile cleaner…one gallon of water and ¼ cup of white vinegar applied with rag will clean your tile.

8. Degrease suede…slightly dampen a rag with vinegar and dab away.

9. Toilet cleaner…1/2 cup vinegar and 1 tablespoon baking soda makes a great scouring solution.

10. Window and glass cleaner…can be diluted up to 50 percent depending on how much dirt is on the windows.

11. Drain cleaner…pour ½ c white vinegar and ½ c baking soda down the drain, cover, let stand for a few minutes, and rinse it down with a pot of boiling water.

12. Bronze and brass polish…1 cup white vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt, and enough flour to make a paste.

13. Shine stainless steel…no need to dilute. Just rub on, wipe off.

14. Catch moths…2 parts vinegar and 1 part molasses placed in a yellow container will attract and contain moths.

15. Removes skunk odors.
